Reggie and the "Cabbage" is a gripping story of open
heart surgery, as lived by the author, a 57-year old male who underwent a quadruple bypass
that failed. A second operation corrected the failure after much hemorrhaging and the
author finally recovered after more than 30 hours of unconsciousness.
The author then later spent two weeks in the CCU with a friend,
Reggie, who is diabetic and contacted the deadly Staph infection.
Mr. Farris was then invited by surgeons to sit in on a four-hour
open heart surgery in preparation for this book.
The book discusses heart and coronary artery disease, our nation's
number one killer, its symptoms, prevention and details of what you can expect should your
heart surgeon ever tell you you need open heart surgery. You will be taken through a vivid
bypass surgery (CABG=Coronary Artery Bypass Graft), explaining
in detail the roles of all members of the team, the surgeons, the anesthesiologist, the
perfusionist and the operating room nurses.
Here's what the reviewers say:
... In my practice of internal medicine I have been involved with
hundreds of people before, during and after CABG. You have done a marvelous job with such
a complicated subject. You have obviously researched this deeply and explain this very
well in a most readable way. The additional philosophical and humorous inserts are very
appropriate. Congratulations for doing a great job.
Art. H. Rutledge, M.D, Internal Medicine
... Your chapter on cardiac nurses and cardiac support
personnel is excellent and makes one proud to have chosen this profession.
Pam Rickard, RN, Cardiac Nurse
... In serving cardiac patients in the capacity of both cardiac nursing and more
recently as a rehabilitation nurse, it was a delight to read the book, especially the
chapter on rehab training. I can see you have learned your lessons well and have conveyed
them to the readers in a most excellent manner. All should benefit from your book.
Leah Prda, RN, Rehabilitation Nurse - Liason to Mended Hearts Inc.
... Complications such as these are fortunately not common but are real life threats
and your book portrays both in a factual and readable manner. I am pleased to be the
subject of your book.
Reggie Cauthen, CABG patient.
... Education, both patient-centered and professional, are an important part of health
care in the '90s and into the New Millenium. This book serves a need for patients,
their families, and health care professionals. The information is pertinent,
presented in a straight forward way with a touch of humor. Good
Reading.
